What you’ll be doing:
This is a ten-week standard length of assignment performing a variety of activities to assist with the day-to day operations of the museum. You will learn new skills relevant to your academic and employment pursuits.
What you will be responsible for:
You will be performing a variety of routine activities to assist the professional staff within the Research and Collections Department. Duties involve tasks that can be readily learned by on-the-job training, and which require some judgment in their execution. You may work independently on routine recurring assignments and will gain valuable experience in cataloguing, documenting, photographing, and researching artifacts and collections. Duties will include: record-keeping, maintaining databases, data entry, scanning documents, cleaning artifacts as well as science demonstrations in a public setting. Duties may also include participation in educational programs and supporting museum staff with exhibit development.
Distinguishing Features: You will learn new skills relevant to their academic and employment pursuits. The anthropology intern works under the general direction of the Curator of Anthropology who will appoint an appropriate staff member to train and supervise the intern. This person will serve as mentor for the intern and as a liaison with the intern’s academic institution if applicable. You may also receive direction from staff or volunteers they are assisting. Training consists of observation, discussion, demonstration, and review of work.
What skills & experience you will bring to us:
Education and Experience: Must be a driven, diligent individual with a deep interest in and demonstrated knowledge of anthropology, archaeology, or related fields. It is not mandatory, but it is highly desirable for the candidate to have some understanding of cultural diversity, decolonization, NAGPRA, and collections protocols.
