Description
PURPOSE STATEMENT The Clerk Phlebotomist under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory, facilitates efficient workflow in the reception area, ensures patients are properly registered and have the appropriate doctor's orders, medical necessity and paperwork required, then enters the lab orders into the computer. They collect lab specimens from inpatients and outpatients, collect DOT and Non-DOT urine drug screen (UDS), complete breath alcohol testing (BAT), process lab reports, answer the telephone and support the general functions of the laboratory.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Enter necessary information in the computer for patients who have orders for laboratory testing.
- Obtain complete documentation for the laboratory orders, calling the doctor's office if necessary, in order to obtain properly signed orders, medical necessity, ABNs and diagnosis codes.
- Process laboratory reports, fax or call results as needed and documents actions in the computer.
- Obtain the proper training and certification in order to collect DOT and Non-DOT UDS and perform BAT on site within 6 months of hire.
- Answer incoming calls and directs them to the proper areas.
- Proficient in phlebotomy techniques and be able to assess patients throughout all stages of life from newborn to elderly regarding their physical and psychological needs.
- Interact positively and cooperatively with patients, visitors, physicians and employees.
- Support the Medical Center's Mission/Vision/Philosophy positively.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other essential duties as assigned
Shift Requirements - 3, 12 hour shifts.
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Requirements
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Phlebotomy experience within the hospital setting preferred.
- Excellent customer relation skills-Ability to communicate well under stressful conditions both on the telephone and in face-to-face encounters.
- Ability to maintain accurate records-good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Able to concentrate and complete detailed work despite frequent interruptions.
- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
- Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
- Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
- Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
- Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
- Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
- Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
- Be able to experience frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids and hazardous chemicals.
- Be able to endure sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distractions and stress.
- All staff may need to rotate shifts on 24 hour 7 days a week schedule.
